Animal Sanctuary.....Help Make It Happen!

This piece of news can't bring more happiness and relief. An animal sanctuary is in the midst of becoming a reality in Penang. It isn't just a wish. It isn't just a hope. It is becoming real! The people in Penang Animal Sanctuary Society are working on it. Hurray....! Being an independent animal rescuer is a hard job and many times it brings much tears and heartaches. For those who have rescued many animals, you will know. As for me, I'm new and still within the counting range of my 10 fingers. Yes, there were tears shed, heartaches and fights (with who else but Hubby!) I'm sure others who walk this same path shares the same stories. Guess this must be the reason, when I got this flyer from Swen (partner of Blue Reef ) I couldn't be happier. Incidentally, the owner of Blue Reef adopted two dogs which 'lived' on the streets. The two dogs Mimi and Hunzo, they are doing very well. I am going to make a brief post on what is written on the flyer handed to me.

The Logo of the Penang Animal Sanctuary Society

Background: The Penang Animal Sanctuary Society (PASS) has been in existence for over six years. Recently it has gained more publicity and has used this as a platform to campaign for animal rights.

Guiding Principles: *The members of PASS are motivated by a deep compassion and love for all animals and a strong conviction that all life is precious. *The society seeks to practice a 'NO-KILL' policy in the Sanctuary project. This philosophy sets it apart from most other animal shelters. The members of PASS are bewildered and grief stricken by the indiscriminate putting down of stray animals by the Authorities and some animal shelters. This wanton destruction of life goes against the basic principles of peaceful co-existence promoted by all major religions of the world. We believe that all creatures are entitled to their rights to co-habit this planet with us and that all animals have a right to live out their normal and natural life.

Objectives: *The society is desirous of seeking the collaboration of both the public and private sectors to serve the above guiding principles. * The immediate and most urgent agenda is to identify a suitable site and develop a programme that addresses the problems previously mentioned. *The society is also desirous of safeguarding the rights of all animals and to the task of promoting public awareness of animal rights.

Role: *PASS sees itself as a solution facilitator to achieving the above 'objectives' within the established 'guiding principles'. *PASS also strongly believes that more Animal Protection Societies should be established to: i) Avoid a monopoly by one or two societies. ii)Provide a choice of shelters to the public. The advantages and benefits of this would accrue to both the public and stray animals. *PASS together with other NGOs would like to also make representations in matters relating to animal welfare when formulation of Government Policies, Acts and Laws are tabled.

Other Events: i) Concert in Aid of Animal Welfare (Entitled:Together We Care) to be held on 10th April 2010 at Berjaya Hotel at 8:00 pm. Tickets are on sale now. Please contact office. ii) Food fair to be held on 27th June 2010 at Penang Times Square from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. iii) Art Auction (details yet to be finalised)

With great humility we invite you to share in our efforts of making this world a better place for all of Nature's beautiful creatures. Though ours is collectively a small step in this direction, we hope it will gain momentum with time so that the vision of a better tomorrow, for all creatures big and small, will become a reality. If you would like to contribute to the programme please contact: Penang Animal Sanctuary Society (Regn. No: 1002) Tel: 019-556 6707 / 04261 4952

***Kindly make payments in favour of :- Penang Animal Sanctuary Society. THANK YOU

***HELP PUT THEM TO BED....DON'T PUT THEM TO SLEEP...***

There is more printed on the flyer. Please feel free to get a copy from the office. Do come and lend your support at the above mentioned events. :o)

It's really good to know that there will soon be a 'no kill policy animal shelter' in Penang Island. There is an existing one (spca)in mainland at Bukit Berapit which rents a piece of land to house the animals. Such shelters will help to reduce if not eliminate the number of stray dogs and cats which appear pathetic and are often abused by heartless inhumane people. May god bless all those who contribute to these organisations even if it is in a small way!

Setting up an animal shelter is a 'dream come true' for all animal lovers, especially in Penang. Whatever it takes, I really hope this project will materialise as soon as possible b'cos i don't want to see helpless strays roaming around w'out food and water and being beaten and kicked around or shot down. I wish to congratulate all those who have been and will be working hard to make this shelter come true

Bubbles...ooo said...

Hi Anon & Devi, TQ for dropping by. Yes all of us (animal lovers) is hoping that the sanctuary will be set up ASAP. If you can, contact P.A.S.S. to help, in anyway you can? TQ for the blessings and MAY YOU BE BLESSED too. :o)

I'm an independent animal rescuer myself and have saved, treated and re-homed dozens of cats and dogs. But certainly this will not deter me from lending a helping hand to PASS. Will join u soon in your mission!

Bubbles...ooo said...

Hi Devi, The Society welcomes you. Believe it or not, I'm not in the 'boat' yet....but have started helping P.A.S.S. Like you and all who are walking this dark and unknown journey, PASS is what I'd say 'prayers answered'. No? :o)

Just thinking aloud. Can the various animal shelters in Penang (GRASS, SPCA Penang, SPCA Seberang Perai and PASS) work hand in hand to achieve the same objectives? They can still coexist anyway, b'cos there are just too many strays to handle by any one shelter. But probably through cooperation, you can achieve the ultimate target of helping these animals. There's a possibility that one shelter lacks something and the other can help. It's just my opinion

Bubbles...ooo said...

Hi, TQ for your thoughts. PASS is a Society for all those who are interested to join. GRASS is free to join. SPCA Penang, I think they share a different policy, the No-kill policy. SPCA Seberang perai, it is already a Society on it's own. I'm only a member so maybe you can call the Society and talk to the committee? Anyway, it is good to have another person who is interested in all these matters. Best regards. :o)

It's heart wrenching to see so many animals out there suffering without a home and food. Recently i saw a cat with its hind leg badly hurt and swollen near Giant hypermarket. I was so tempted to take it to the vet and treat it but on second thoughts where am i to house it after that. I already have so many at home. I really wonder when this shelter will be ready. Hope real soon. the other one at seberang perai is close to eviction. Feeling real sad

Bubbles...ooo said...

Hi, Real sad alright when we see these animals loitering around w/out homes n many hungry. Like u and all who has a heart 4 these animals....when will the sanctuary start. I am just as anxious as everyone else. Pray that funds come in smoothly n swiftly and things work out w/out hitches. I am praying hard. :o)

Shelter remains a Dream!!!!!!!!!!

Bubbles...ooo said...

Hi, Maybe Yes. I'm trying to wake up too. My strays won't survive till the Sanctuary comes up if u want to know how I feel. FYI, I am just a normal member n doing my bit to help the Committee Members if you want to know more maybe u can call the Society and ask, k? TQ I presume dat u r also an animal lover. Lets pray for the strays. Best Wishes.

Recently had a chat with Nornee about the shelter. Looks like they have come to the last hurdle:approval of building plans. The whole submission has to go through so many check points-i dread that. This is expected to take another couple of weeks (by early March i guess) after which they can start building the shelter. In the mean time, they will have to collect more funds not only for the building but to operate the shelter. They are coming up with a fund raising charity show to be held end of May this year. Tickets will be available soon. In short, it is not as easy as ABC to come up with an animal shelter. If ever the strays on the island can hang on that long.........

Bubbles...ooo said...

Hi Devi, Nice 2 c u here again. Been a while eh. The Sanctuary? Hv 2b honest wif u. I decided not to be active a/more. Like u, I too hv this question in my head...wl the strays 'hang on in there' till the sanctuary come up? At d moment Im struggling wif mine. 1 is completely bald due to bad mange and it breaks my heart to c her yelping and running away when it starts to drizzle...each time I feed them. 1 is with a broken leg..the others...so skinny I do not know what to feed them anymore. Is it a dream...? All the best n take care

Devi said...

Understand your frustation. I'm facing similar problems too. But i try my best: feed them, and treat them where possible. Since it's not possible to catch them, I just describe the problem to the vet and get them medication which is stuffed into the food i give. Of course where mange is concerned, they have to be given injections and daily applications and definitely is a problem to treat strays. Recently my pets (15 in number:both cats and dogs)acquired sarcoptic mange from the strays. They must have contracted it from the stray cats which sneak in and out of the gate. I dreaded it and it cost me a bomb to treat all of them. But perseverance is a must. It took me 2 months to eradicate the problem. Just imagine, i had to be at the vet almost every day, sometimes 2-3 times per day. I've just started breathing again. As for the shelter, well many others are facing problems too. Having the shelter is one thing but sufficient funds to operate it is another big challenge. I'm in contact with many other shelters: you'll see the problems they encounter through their facebooks. Whatever it takes we must keep one thing in mind: try and help the poor furry ones where possible. We do what we can in our capacity. Really hope this shelter come true one day!

Bubbles...ooo said...

Hi Devi, Your words r comforting. Hv to agree to this..we will do w/ever we can in our capacity for the furry ones. M/time, all we can do is pray that the sanctuary comes up. BTW,r u on facebook? All the best. Take care:o)
